August 1, 2021: Day 504 of COVID
This is great. Today we are doing family/ friend tennis and meeting Fabi's roommates. I ready enjoy these moments. So much laughter and great memories.
Athena and Caylee were not into tennis today and enjoyed relaxing.
Viviana even got out on the tennis courts for some fun.

Dad and I took Athena on a Dinner date to Lazy Dog. Athena is a dad's girl, loving every second of his story.

- As the Delta variant spreads, New York City's mayor announced a "first in nation" requirement of vaccines at gyms, restaurants and other indoor places of business.
- Meanwhile, US vaccination rates continue to tick upward, especially in states with the highest case rates, according to the White House's coronavirus response coordinator

- The Delta variant now accounts for an estimated 93.4% of Covid-19 cases in the US, according to new US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention numbers.
- The World Health Organization is calling for a moratorium on booster shots until at least the end of September, so more of the global population can get initial doses.
- Meanwhile, new global Covid-19 cases have been increasing for more than a month, and the world is on track to hit more than 200 million cases next week, the WHO says

More than 98% of US residents now live in an area with a "high" or "substantial" risk of Covid-19 community transmission -- a CDC metric that involves case numbers and test positivity rates. A mere month ago, that figure was at only 19%. In some areas, like Cobb County in Georgia, some schools have already had to switch to virtual learning to keep kids safe from rising infections. Experts are hoping to get children vaccinated soon and to re-up protection for vulnerable populations, which could turn these worrying trends around. The FDA is expected to announce within days that it is authorizing Covid-19 vaccine booster shots for some people who are immunocompromised. Meanwhile, US intelligence officials tasked with investigating the origins of Covid-19 are nearing the end of their 90-day assignment and have drafted a classified report now under preliminary review.

First HS Tournament of the season.

August 21, 2021: Day 524 of COVID
COVID-19 News:
Covid-19 vaccines are very effective against preventing infection, but no vaccine is 100% effective. Fully vaccinated people can and do become infected. It's not known exactly how many of these breakthrough infections are occurring, as the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is not collecting national data this comprehensive. Based on reports from 25 states that do keep track of these data, the Kaiser Family Foundation estimates that the rate of breakthrough infections is well below 1%.
August 22, 2021: Day 525 of COVID: COVID News
With the "imminent" full approval of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine expected, more businesses will likely issue vaccine mandates to help prevent the Delta variant from sending the country further backward in this pandemic, doctors say.
"For businesses and universities that have been thinking about putting vaccine requirements in place in order to create safer spaces for people to work and learn, I think that this move from the FDA ... will actually help them to move forward with those kinds of plans," US Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy told CNN on Sunday.

Global Covid-19 cases appear to be leveling off after a two-month increase, the World Health Organization says. WHO reported more than 4.5 million new cases and 68,000 new deaths worldwide last week, which was only a slight increase over the previous week. Don't get too optimistic, though -- there was a similar pattern in May, before the Delta variant spurred a worldwide surge in outbreaks. The winter could be even more difficult, when Covid-19 risk combines with flu season again. Normally, the CDC recommends getting a flu shot by the end of October. But with so many pandemic variables, some experts are recommending getting it even sooner.
August 26, 2021: Day 529 of COVID
Layden's doctor schedule an ultrasound to look closer at his Lump. I spent all night researching what to look for in the ultrasound to be able to see the difference between fluid, cancer, etc. This doesn't look terrible but I have a lot of questions.

Boys have a high school match at Fredric HS. Issiah wasn't allowed to play. Bummer.

COVID-19 News: Moderna has completed its submission to the FDA for full approval of its Covid-19 vaccine for people 18 and older. Meanwhile, Pfizer and BioNTech have begun submitting data for full approval of a third "booster" dose of their vaccine. As expected, full FDA approval of the two-dose Pfizer vaccine is leading to more mandates. The Pentagon is requiring all US military service members to get fully vaccinated against Covid-19 immediately. Disney World also reached a deal with two employees unions to require vaccinations among applicable staff. In a worrying turn, some people have been ingesting ivermectin, a drug used to de-worm livestock, as a treatment for Covid-19. Some hospitals and poison control centers have seen an uptick in such cases as some Republican elected officials and conservative media figures irresponsibly tout the drug.
August 27, 2021: Day 530 of COVID
The unthinkable. They now what bloodwork. Ryleigh is being a great big brother and coming with us to support Layden getting his blood work.
Layden did great.
This a challenging. Earlier this week we discovered a lump on Layden's neck (Layden: "Look, I'm extra manly, I have 2 adams apples!") After ultrasound, it was confirmed Layden has a hyperechoic solid mass with internal vascularity, with many more needed discoveries before diagnosis. This is a devastating blow. Layden has gone through so much with his health. This is the last thing he needs. He deserves to be a happy healthy teenager without any problems. Fingers crossed it's benign and isn't causing any thyroid issues.
Fuck. We just got past his other health issues, and Layden had been free to live healthy, of play sports, and just be a teenager.
Layden, while there is so much uncertainty, so much unknown, so many tears of not wanting to do this again, please know you can count on your father and I to be next to you every step of the way. You are so loved.
After Layden's blood work the 3 of us went out for breakfast. Layden hates me.
Chris and I are feeling a bit overwhelmed about what is going on with Layden. Went out for drinks and run into some old friends.

The rate of Covid-19 deaths has increased in 42 US states in the last week, according to new data, as the spread of the more virulent coronavirus Delta variant has upended a spring of reopenings and led to increasing concern headed into autumn.
In 14 states, Covid-19 deaths increased by more than 50% over the past week, while another 28 states saw an uptick of at least 10%, data from Johns Hopkins University on Friday shows.
In Alabama, one of the hardest-hit states in the latest surge, overall hospitalization numbers continue to climb, driving health officials to use mobile trailers to house bodies because Covid-19 deaths are soaring, state health officer Dr. Scott Harris said Friday.

- A CDC forecast projects more than 200,000 coronavirus deaths in the United States by Sept. 19, as the country approaches 6 million confirmed coronavirus cases.
- At least 36 states have reported positive cases at colleges and universities as a new school year starts, with the University of Alabama alone recording 1,200 cases.
- India reported 78,761 new cases in 24 hours and has now recorded 3,542,733 cases in total — behind only the US and Brazil
August 31, 2021: Day 534 of COVID
Issiah and Athena are talking to the doctor about getting their wisdom teeth out.

More kids were hospitalized with Covid-19 this month than any other time this past year -- proving how seriously the Delta variant can hit any age group.
Between August 20 and 26, an average of 330 children were admitted to hospitals every day with Covid-19, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
